Why Neverwinter Wine
I love Linux, and I am so excited that Neverwinter will be released for Linux. However, I was quite disappointed
to learn that the Neverwinter Toolset would not be released for my favorite operating system. All hope is not lost though. If you did not
know already there is a really cool project called wine which will help us out. It is a LGPL implementation of the win32 API under Linux. It has been around for a long time and has progressed very well, but most probably it will not "just work" out of the box with the toolset. The best evidence the fact that the model viewer doesn't work with the current version of wine (the toolset will use the same graphics engine). Probably, the first set is to get the Model Viewer working, and then we can move to the toolset from there.
What is here?
This is suppose to be a gathering place for developers and anybody who wants to keep up with the status of getting the toolset to work under Linux. There is a mailing list for discussions about problems, bugs, and ways to fix them in wine. I am also hosting an anonymous cvs server where you can get the latest and greatest version of our code. And when any significant progress is made I will release a snapshot of the code for everyone to use. Hopefully this website will provide what is need to get the job done. If you have any suggestions about what to put here please drop me a line (nwn AT beergeek.net)
Why fork the source?
My plan isn't really to fork the wine source. All progress in getting the toolset running will be sent back to winehq.com for inclusion in the main tree. I just wanted a stable common base for us to work off of (which is why I chose the latest snapshot available from wine). I also wanted a place for people to talk about this without spamming the main wine mailing lists. I think this project will be important to a lot of people (well to me at least), so by providing our own tree we can get a working toolset out to the NWN community faster without waiting for the wine guys to release another snapshot (They generally release once a month or so).
About Me
My name is Ryan Stallings and I have been lurking around NWN for a couple of years now. I am a professional
software developer for an Embedded Software company. Given that I don't know much about Windows or OpenGL (I am
more of a low-level hardware and OS guy). So go easy on me if I sound dumb a lot :)
